Shaun Maslyk

What is Enough?

Shaun opens with a story most of us have heard: a businessman tells a fisherman he could build a fleet, make millions, and retire to a small village where he can fish, nap and see his friends, which is exactly the life the fisherman already has. The usual lesson is to stop chasing money. Shaun thinks that misses something. What if the fisherman loves building? There’s nothing wrong with ambition. The more interesting question is what we believe will finally change when we get more.

From there the conversation moves into research from Elizabeth Dunn and her colleagues on how we predict money will make us feel. We tend to overestimate how much better the next level of income will be, and then we adjust to it faster than we expect. The dream salary becomes your salary. Shaun introduces two business owners with the same goal and very different reasons for chasing it, and makes the case that ambition and satisfaction can live side by side. The years you spend building aren’t a waiting room. They’re your life.
