He builds the AI systems that measure how people are doing. He also handed his own AI-generated books to his accountant, who asked what the hell he had done.
Prof. Llewellyn van Zyl is a psychologist and data scientist who designs AI-driven well-being and assessment systems for large organisations. He’s also one of the loudest voices arguing that these systems can quietly erode the capacities they claim to support.
In this conversation he walks through a system his team built to predict employee burnout without asking a single question, explains where the human has to stay in the loop, and gives the cleanest rule I’ve heard for using these tools: take the output as a hypothesis to be tested, not a suggestion to be incorporated.
Underneath it is his own story — a hundred published papers on well-being, a burnout none of them could touch, and a rebuilt definition of success that has nothing to do with output.
